Trying to restrain myself from reblogging all the Martha Jones hate posts defending her.
I honestly don’t understand people. They call her “slutty” “needy” and “clingy,” say she complained too much, say she never helped the Doctor.
What the hell? Did we watch the same tv show or is there an alternative DW version in which Martha is all those things, because SERIOUSLY.
Martha saved the world, all by herself. She never threw herself at the Doctor (the way Rose and Amy did, for example) she never complained and she never caused more trouble (the way Rose did from time to time) than what was already happening.
Why does there always have to be such hostility towards her? She put her feelings aside for the whole time she traveled with the Doctor. She put up with him being a jerk towards her and constantly reminding her that “she’s not Rose.”
I’m not going to make this about Rose (who is not my favorite character) and point out all of her flaws (which are many) but honestly, it’s like, because people started watching New Who without having seen the old series, they assumed that Rose wasn’t A companion but THE companion, the final, better, only companion. And guess what? The Doctor has had tons and tons of companions, and just because Rose came to him when he was at a bad place (Time War, the end of his kind, blah blah blah,) it doesn’t mean that she is automatically THE ONE, THE BEST.
Rose was good for the Doctor at the time. She helped him become warm and loving when the war had turned him into a cold, slightly heartless person. All the other companions helped him as well. The fact that Martha isn’t Rose doesn’t automatically make her bad. In my eyes, it makes her even better, because she was her own person, and she never tried to be anything else. It seems like people got so centered around the Rose/Doctor love story that they forgot that hey, she isn’t the only companion ever.
Remember how jealous Rose was when she found out about Sarah Jane? How she was acting immature and being bitter and rude towards her because she thought that she was the only one and meeting SJ totally threw her off? Well, she later realized that she wasn’t, that people had come before her and that people would come afterwards, and people seem to fail to realize this.
Companions are short-termed. They know this, the Doctor know this, and viewers should really start grasping this concept already. The chances of there being a companion that stays forever and becomes immortal and spends the rest of their life with the Doctor are slim, if not null. People need to stop obsessing with companions as the Doctor’s ultimate partner because it simply won’t happen, and if it ever does, it will probably mean the end of DW.
Now, Martha was an amazing companion. She was sharp, she was brilliant, she was brave and she was smart. She never caused any trouble, she never complained about how shitty things were for her (because seriously, the Doctor could have been a little nicer towards her, considering she kept helping him.)
From day one she put her feelings and safety aside, and devoted herself to the Doctor, and to saving the world. She was always clever, level-headed, witty and resourceful. She always managed to work with barely any help from the Doctor, who seemed to always leave her at the wrong place at the right time. She was great since the beginning, showing compassion and courage and risking her life from day one, but as series three went on, she kept growing and improving and becoming even a better person than she was before.
And she fell for the Doctor, so what? Who wouldn’t have? The day she met him the Doctor automatically showed interest in her, praised her and even kissed her on the mouth. She didn’t know him, of course she was led on by this! She had no idea what had happened with Rose (and she never fully found out,) or that the Doctor was still grieving her loss. She fell in love with him and he didn’t love her back, and she never ONCE complained about this to him. She voiced it a couple of times when secondary characters asked her about it, but she never went up to the Doctor and said ANYTHING ABOUT IT. She kept her feelings to herself and tried to be the best companion she could, considering her heart broke every time he didn’t look at her. She only ever complained about the Doctor comparing her to Rose, and not in a ‘get over her, i’m better’ kind of way, but just showing that she was her own person, not trying to replace anyone and just wanting the recognition she deserved.
Martha saved the world, repeatedly. She saved the Doctor from the Master, all by herself, with nothing but a vague instruction from the Doctor, to him she couldn’t talk to or ask for advice. She was all alone, and spent a whole year traveling, scared and lonely and vulnerable, not knowing what was happening to her family or the Doctor as she did what she was supposed to, not even sure if it would work. Martha did nothing but work hard and help every time that she could, she never put herself or her feelings as a priority and always tried her best.
And she got out. She was able to walk away from the Doctor when she thought it was time. She has spent a year fighting and suffering and going through hell, and her family needed her. And she needed herself, too. As amazing as traveling with the Doctor was, it was affecting her too, and she knew when to get out. It wasn’t just because ‘the Doctor didn’t love her,’ because Martha was a strong character and was able to deal with that for a long time, but she was needed at home, and she knew that her relationship with the Doctor wasn’t healthy for her. She made a smart decision, and for once did what was best for her and her family, instead of always putting the Doctor first.
The fact that she left didn’t mean that she was ungrateful, or that she didn’t value her time with the Doctor. It just meant that she had to make a decision, and she chose what was best for her. Every companion has an expiration date, whether because they leave, because the Doctor leaves them or because they die. Martha chose to take this matter into her own hands, and she left while she was still on top, while her memories with the Doctor were still fond ones.
And then she came back to help the Doctor, and she met Rose, and instead of being jealous or bitter about it, she was so happy, because she knew how the Doctor felt about Rose, and she loved him enough to be happy for him.
I honestly don’t understand where the Martha hate comes from. I have never even heard a logical argument explaining why people hate her so much; all I hear is ‘she’s a slut,’ ‘she’s clingy’ ‘she’s whiny’ ‘she’s not Rose’. I understand liking a character better or worse, and I know that sometimes this dislike can not be properly explained, or is sort of irrational, but hating on a character for no reason, slut shaming them and calling them things that don’t apply to them is awful.
Martha Jones was an amazing character, and an amazing companion, and if it wasn’t for her, the Doctor wouldn’t have survived. Her contribution to his life and to the world is just as valuable as any other companion’s, and people need to stop putting her character down.
i love this this just proves what a fucking amazing person Martha Jones is she wasn’t given the easiest time by the doctor and it was all down to his feelings for rose and his anger having lost her and yet Martha’s first reaction is to be pleased that they found each other no bitterness no coldness just happiness
